SUMMARY:Nonlinear resonance and excitability in interconnected systems - I

DESCRIPTION:Mechanical and electrical systems have long been fundamental e
xamples for researchers in systems and control theory. In this talk I will
present how we addressed questions about interconnected systems of intere
st in two applications: vibration absorption and bursting generation. In t
he first part I will explain how coupling singularity theory with classica
l methods gives us a powerful viewpoint on nonlinear frequency responses.
In the second part I will address how we can understand bursting as being
generated by the interconnection of two active circuits. I think of these
two examples as fundamental in the respective domains\, and hope that they
will form the basis of a systems and control theory away from equilibrium
