DESCRIPTION:The potential for recent advances in machine learning methods 
 to revolutionise weather and climate science is now widely recognised. At 
 the Met Office\, activity in this area has increased considerably in the l
 ast 12 to 18 months with the aim of bringing data driven technologies thro
 ugh into 'business as usual' within the next few years. In this talk I wil
 l give an overview of some of the projects currently underway\, discuss so
 me of the challenges we have faced\, and present some ideas for future wor
 k.\n
