SUMMARY:Energy efficiency opportunities from heat pumps - Alex White - Sen
ior Lecturer in Thermofluids\, University of Cambridge

CONTACT:Jon Cullen
DESCRIPTION:Approximately one third of global energy use is associated wit
h heating and cooling air in buildings\, and many of the speakers in the s
eries have identified the major energy efficiency opportunity available th
rough providing heating via a heat pump. This talk will give an overview o
f the range of heat pumps available\, and assess their future potential\n\
nAlex White is a Senior Lecturer in Thermofluids at Cambridge University E
ngineering Department. He is also a Fellow and Director of Studies at Pete
rhouse. Alex read Engineering at King's College Cambridge between 1985 and
1988\, and remained at King's for his PhD. After four years of post-docto
ral research (in Cambridge\, Lyon and Toulouse) he took up a lectureship a
t the School of Engineering in Durham. He returned to Cambridge in 2000 wh
ere he is now a member of the Energy Group. Alex's research interests incl
ude two-phase flow (especially vapour-droplet flows)\, the thermodynamics
of power generation\, Computational Fluid Dynamics\, and heat pumps.
