DESCRIPTION:Cosmic strings arise as remnants of phase transitions in the e
arly Universe\, often related to theories of grand unification (GUTs). If
such a phase transitions occurs at high energies\, the resulting cosmic st
ring network generates a sizable amount of gravitational waves. Most work
so far has focused on the gravitational wave signal from topologically sta
ble cosmic strings. In this talk I will introduce metastable cosmic string
s\, which are a generic consequence of many GUTs\, are largely unconstrain
ed so far but can be probed by current and upcoming gravitational wave exp
eriments. As a concrete example\, I will present an SO(10) model which exp
lains inflation\, baryogenesis and dark matter while being fully testable
 by LIGO.
