DESCRIPTION:'Everybody knows'\, so they say\, that the origins of the Engl
ish lie in north-west European immigration into England between 400-600 AD
. This talk reconsiders that belief by evaluating the evidence that underl
ies it\, and considers other approaches to interpreting that past. It conc
ludes that the emergence of the English should rather be sought in the com
plex adaptation\, evolution and innovation of late Romano-British communit
 ies in the post-imperial centuries.\n\nRegister "here":https://wolfson-cam
