DESCRIPTION:The Himalayan erosion generates one of the world largest sedim
ent transport system. Assessing\nmodern fluxes is difficult in such large
river system as there is a large seasonal variability and because floodpl
ain sequestration and bedload transport are potentially important but not\
nmeasurable. Geochemical budget can be used to approach these fluxes\, how
ever such budget relies\non the representativeness of the measured composi
tions. New data on river sediments of the\nBrahmaputra and Ganga coupled w
ith acoustic Doppler current profiling or rivers allow a much\nmore reliab
le assessment of the suspended and bed sediment compositions. These data a
re used to\ndiscuss global Himalayan erosion\, chemical weathering\, impac
t on the carbon cycle\, as well\nas the effect of anthropogenic activities
