DESCRIPTION:One of the outstanding achievements of 20th Century science wa
s the realisation that the great diversity of nature is based on a handful
of elementary particles acting under the influence of only a few fundamen
tal forces. It forms the basis of particle physics\, a field \nwhich exten
ds beyond the confines of the atom towards a synthesis with astronomy and
cosmology. We explain particle physics and show how experiments at large a
ccelerators help us to recreate some of the conditions of the early univer
 se.
