DESCRIPTION:Here at Cambridge\, we always encourage our students to learn
and develop themselves in a variety of areas of life. \n\nA select number
of psychology students have the chance to meet Lee and sample an excerpt f
rom the upcoming book 'How To Conquer Anything'\, by "Lee Chambers":https:
//leechambers.org\, MSc Environmental Psychologist and Wellbeing Consultan
t from the University of Surrey. He is also the founder of "Essentialise":
https://www.essentialise.co.uk\n\nHe is also hosted a webinar for another
group of students which was certainly insightful in these challenging time
 s. Below is a sample from the chapter on fear\, with permission from Mr Ch
ambers.\n\nThe first big idea is the heartbeat of optimizing. This class c
 ould have\nbeen called Courage 101\, Conquering Fear 101\, Courage 101\, b
ut we've\ngot to remember that Aristotle's number one virtue when he tells
us\nthat the meaning of life is to basically reach our potential to live
as a\neudaimon\, have a good soul to be the best version of ourselves.\nYo
u do that by living with virtue and the number one virtue? Courage.\nIt's
the heartbeat of optimizing. The heartbeat of you becoming the best\nversi
on of you. I say heartbeat because the word courage comes from\nthe Latin
word that means heart. Just as your heart vitalizes your arms\nand legs an
 d other organs\, vital organs\, courage vitalizes the other\nvirtues.\nWe'
re also going to talk about a great quote from a guy name Stan\nBeecham\,
leading modern day mental toughness coach. He says\, "Fear is\nstanding in
the way of you reaching your potential. Therefore\,\nconquering fear shou
ld be your number one priority. Your primary goal\nin life." Powerful stuf
f\, we'll talk about that more.\nSecond big idea. When we want to conquer
fear is to know that it's not\njust you. You're not alone. I wish someone
told me when I was five years\nold and 15 years old and 25 and 35 that it'
s not about me being me\, as\nmy old coach Steve Chen would used to say\,
it's about me being human.\nWe all experience fear as David Reynolds says\
, a Zen psychotherapist\,\n"Anybody who says they're never afraid is both
and I quote stupid and\nlying."\nCommon humanity. We all experience fear.
Let's quit shaming ourselves\,\nwe will talk about that more. The third bi
g idea is to seek. We're going\nto look at the etymology of the word conqu
er. “Con” + “quer.” Two latin\nwords. Basically it means to succes
sfully seek. That's what conquest\nmeans\, conquer means. To successfully
seek.\nThe “quer” part of it means to seek. If we want to conquer fear
\,\nparadoxically\, we need to seek fear. We need to quit avoiding things\
nthat freak us out and lean into them\, approach them as psychologists\nwo
uld say. We're going to talk about the importance of that and walking\nthr
ough fear doors\, an idea we talked about in greatest fear over 2019.\nThe
fourth big idea\, we want to become master alchemists. The subtitle\nfor
the class is alchemizing fear into excitement. That energy you feel\nwhen
you feel fear is neutral energy until you put meaning on it. We\nwant to u
se that neutral energy to our advantage by alchemizing it.\nWe're actually
going to reference Paulo Coelho in his Alchemist.\nA couple of great quot
es in there. He says\, "You've got a mission in life\nand the only thing t
hat's standing in the way of making it possible is\nyour fear of failure."
We want to become master alchemists using every\nmoment to move from fear
to excitement. Those little micro moments\nof stepping through those fear
doors are going to give us the power we\nneed to reach our potential.
