DESCRIPTION:While it is widely acknowledged that not all children are equa
lly susceptible to adverse developmental experiences--and thus we often sp
eak of vulnerable and resilient children--it is pretty much taken for gran
ted that all children benefit more or less equally from supportive\, stimu
lating and/or enriching environments. I argue that not only should childre
n vary in their susceptibility to both positive and negative rearing exper
iences--and for evolutionary-biological reasons--but that the very childre
n who appear particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of adverse re
aring conditions are the very ones who get the most out of supportive rear
ing milieus. Correlational and experimental evidence is reviewed to substa
ntiate this claim\, along with evidence that focuses upon phenotypic\, end
ophenotypic and genetic markers of what appears to be heightened plasticit
 y in early human development.
