DESCRIPTION:The sign language of the British Deaf community is no more uni
form than any other living language. As well as showing a great deal of r
egional variation\, BSL is influenced by other social and identity factors
such as\nage\, gender\, ethnic origin and educational and family backgrou
nd influence BSL. Some variation is similar to that seen in other language
s in Britain and some is specific to the unique position of the Deaf commu
nity within British society. Additionally there is evidence of rapid lang
uage change as Deaf society has changed and continues to change. This sem
inar outlines\nsome effects of social factors on pronunciation\, vocabular
y\, grammar and discourse on the beautiful\, dynamic and fascinating visua
 l language that is\nBSL.\n
