DESCRIPTION:The capacity to regenerate missing body parts is widespread in
lower organisms whereas this capability in mammals is limited. Antlers a
re an exception\; these remarkable appendages are shed and replaced annual
ly\ndemonstrating that a large bony organ can be fully regenerated by an a
dult mammal provided the environment is appropriate. Exploring the mechani
sms underlying antler regeneration and comparing this process with regener
ation in other vertebrates can provide crucial insights into why mammals a
re unable to regenerate appendages and may lead to the development of ther
apeutic strategies that can overcome this inability.
