DESCRIPTION:Jihad is a highly notorious and much misunderstood term. Drawi
 ng\non the Quran\, Hadith and classical scholarship\, I will attempt to\np
 resent a definition of Jihad in Islam in order to clear some of\nthe misco
 nceptions surrounding the subject. The objectives and\nlaws governing Jiha
 d will be explored as will the evolution of\nJihad theory under Muhammad '
 Abduh and Rashid Rida. The Modernists\nresponse to the Western intrusion i
 n the Islamic World will also be\ndiscussed. Finally we will consider how 
 this comparatively innocuous\nphenomenon has been warped beyond all recogn
 ition by contemporary\nIslamic Radicals bent on plunging the world into pe
 rmanent Manichean\nconflict.\n
