DESCRIPTION:This research project examines how diet changed during and aft
 er the Jomon-\nYayoi cultural transition\, roughly 3\,000 years ago\, in t
he western part of\nJapan. By using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ana
lyses of human bone\ncollagen\, it is possible to gain direct information
about what individuals\nate during the last 20 or so years of their lives.
The primary use of such\ninformation in this project is to gauge the rela
tive importance of\navailable food resources. Although previous research h
as suggested that\nthis transition is represented by the aquatic to terres
trial shift seen\nduring most agricultural transitions\, the work presente
d in this paper\nindicates that it is in fact more complex than this.\n\n
