DESCRIPTION:Early relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK)\
nwere critically shaped by three decisive events: diplomatic normalization
\nin1965\, the 1973 abduction of opposition politician Kim Dae-jung from J
apan\nand the attempted assassination of President Park Chunghee in 1974.
These\nevents have remained controversial\, not least because much of the
detailed\ninformation surrounding them has been classified. Prompted by th
e partial\ndeclassification initiatives of the Roh Moon-hyun administratio
n\, this\narticle relies on recently released archival material and new sc
holarship\nin Japan\, South Korea and the United Kingdom to consider the e
xtent to\nwhich difficulties in the bilateral relationship were a product
of\ntraditional patterns of historical animosity\, and to assess the role
of the\nUnited States in bringing the contending parties together. In the
process\,\nthe article critically considers the persuasiveness of internat
ional\nrelations theory in making sense of changes in the post-war Korea-J
 apan\nrelationship.\n
