DESCRIPTION:The _lac_ operon\, an extensively studied genetic regulatory s
ystem\, is responsible for regulating the metabolism of lactose in _Escher
ichia coli_. Existing models of the _lac_ operon are in the most part dete
rministic\, and have sought to describe the nature of induction in the ope
ron by means of the bistability which arises in the non-linear determinist
ic models used. A model is derived using published as well as experimental
data\, and it is shown by means of a hybrid stochastic simulation algorit
hm that bimodality during induction results from the stochastic nature of
the _lac_ operon. Deterministic models\, and hence bistability\, are not a
ble to predict the behaviour of the operon.
