DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:* Internet of Things (IoT) interacts with people by
tightly integrating sensing\, communication\, and computation with human o
bjects. IoT systems can augment human performance\, illuminate the emergin
g socio-technological landscape\, and enhance the quality of life. In rece
nt years\, the internet of “hearable” things\, which goes beyond earbu
ds and hearing aids\, is considered as the next-generation wave of the tec
hnological revolution in mobile and wearable computing\, and become the fi
rst 24/7 seamless interface in smartphones\, smart homes\, and smart vehic
les. In this talk\, I will share some research experience on our recent at
tempts (including examples of success and failure) in exploring new hearab
le technologies and applications. A few philosophical questions/hypes in h
ealth and security\, driven by the future hearable IoT\, will be discussed
\, such as “Why is it difficult to hear in noisy places”\, “What is
the sound of your fingerprint and how does it sound?”\, and “Where is
the largest hospital in the world in 10 years?”.\n\n*Bio:* Dr. Wenyao Xu
is currently an Associate Professor of the Computer Science and Engineeri
ng Department\, University at Buffalo (SUNY). His group has focused on exp
loring novel sensing and computing technologies to build up innovative Int
 ernet-of-Things (IoT) systems for high-impact human-technology application
s in the fields of Smart Health and Cyber-Security. Results have been publ
ished in peer-reviewed top research venues across multiple disciplines\, i
ncluding Computer Science conferences (e.g.\, ACM SenSys\, MobiSys\, MobiC
 om\, UbiComp\, ASPLOS\, ISCA\, HPCA\, Oakland\, NDSS and CCS)\, Biomedical
Engineering journals (e.g.\, IEEE TBME\, TBioCAS\, and JBHI)\, and Medici
ne journals (e.g.\, LANCET). His group won the best paper awards\, includi
 ng MobiSys’20\, MMSys’20\, SenSys’19\, HotMobile’18 and BHI’17.
His inventions have been filed within U.S. and internationally as patents\
, and have been licensed to industrial players. His research has been repo
rted in high-impact media outlets\, including the Discovery Channel\, CNN\
, NPR\, and the Wall Street Journal. Dr. Xu is an Associate Editor of IEEE
Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems (TBCAS)\, serves the tech
nical program committee of many academic conferences in the field of Inter
 net of Things (e.g.\, MobiSys\, IPSN\, and INFOCOM)\, and has been a TPC c
o-chair of 2018 IEEE Body Sensor Networks.
