SUMMARY:Concrete Shear Strengthening with Embedded FRP bars: Recent Advanc
es and Required Research - Dr. Samir Dirar\, University of Birmingham

DESCRIPTION:Heavier traffic loads\, poor initial design\, aggressive expos
ure conditions\, natural or man-made extreme events and steel reinforcemen
t corrosion can all deteriorate the shear strength of existing reinforced
concrete (RC) structures. Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) shear strengtheni
ng solutions have emerged in response to the increasing number of shear-de
ficient RC structures. This talk addresses shear strengthening of existing
RC beams with embedded FRP bars. First\, a synthesis of beam test results
will be presented. This will be followed by an overview of the research c
arried out at the University of Birmingham\, which addresses existing gaps
in knowledge and identifies the effect of the main parameters influencing
shear behaviour\, namely shear span-to-effective depth ratio\, size effec
t and existing steel to FRP shear reinforcement ratio.\n\n
