DESCRIPTION:Effects such as piezoelectricity\, pyroelectricity\, photogalv
 anic effect\, etc. occurs spontaneously only in materials with broken symm
 etry. We will show here that similar effects can be induced in centrosymme
 tric materials by lowering the innate symmetry using elastic and electric 
 fields. This offers new avenues for developing new devices\, such as pyroe
 lectric semiconductors\, that are largely forbidden by the native material
 s.
