DESCRIPTION:The rich archaeological heritage of the Veluwe\, a large fores
ted area in the central Netherlands\, has been investigated for decades th
rough field survey and excavations of selected sites\, e.g. prehistoric bu
rial mounds. A recently released LiDAR-derived elevation model of the enti
re Netherlands offers the opportunity to study the archaeological landscap
e of the Veluwe on a regional scale. However\, this requires new\, efficie
nt and effective methods for the archaeological analysis of large remote s
ensing datasets.\n\nSince 2017 we have been developing WODAN\, the first a
utomated detector of multiple classes of archaeological objects in LiDAR d
ata. This algorithm is based on Deep Learning\, which requires labeled inp
ut data for training. In order to acquire such data and to compare the per
formance of computational methods to those of human operators\, we also co
nducted a Citizen Science project in which hundreds of volunteers mapped t
he same classes of archaeological objects in LiDAR data in Zooniverse\, an
online platform for Citizen Science projects.\n\nIn this talk I will pres
ent the current state of the Heritage Quest project and discuss opportunit
ies for a fruitful integration of Data Science and Citizen Science approac
hes for the benefit of archaeological landscape studies.
