SUMMARY:Understanding Giant Planets - Ravit Helled - University of Zurich

DESCRIPTION:Planets are common astronomical objects. Gas giant planets\, w
hich are massive planets made of mostly hydrogen and helium\, are the firs
t planets to form\, and due to their large masses they affect the dynamica
l evolution of young planetary systems. In addition\, giant planet composi
tion reveals key information on the birth environment of planets. \n\nIn
this talk I will briefly summarise giant planet formation\, evolution\, a
nd interior models. I will show that giant planets are complex objects tha
t can have composition gradients and fuzzy cores\, and that their internal
structure and evolution depend on their growth history. \n\nI will also p
resent new structure models of Jupiter that fit the planet’s gravity dat
a as measured by the NASA Juno mission\, and explain how they reveal infor
mation on Jupiter's origin and evolution. \n\nFinally\, I will discuss t
he connection between recent developments in giant planet theory and high-
pressure physics as well as the characterisation of giant planets around o
 ther stars.
