DESCRIPTION:Flooding is one of the most costly natural disasters and every
year affects hundreds of millions of people and causes billions of dollar
s in losses\, and the most damaging events often impact multiple countries
simultaneously. Despite this\, the reality is that all flood impacts are
felt locally and occur at the level of individual properties. The ultima
te challenge in flood modelling therefore is how to provide detailed and s
kilful hazard and risk predictions at the scale of individual buildings ov
er whole continents or even the whole globe. This talk considers the flui
d dynamics of floodplain inundation\, and the key process that models need
in order to make skilful predictions. It shows how careful model develop
ment and validation can be used to meet the above challenge.
