DESCRIPTION:Skyrmions represent topologically stable field configurations
with\nparticle-like properties. We use neutron scattering to observe the\n
spontaneous formation of a two-dimensional lattice of skyrmion lines\, a\n
type of magnetic vortices\, in transition metal compounds with B20 crystal
\nstructure. The skyrmion lattice stabilizes at the border between\nparama
gnetism and long-range helimagnetic order perpendicular to a small\napplie
d magnetic field - regardless of the direction of the magnetic field\nrela
tive to the atomic lattice. Our study experimentally establishes\nmagnetic
materials lacking inversion symmetry as an arena for new forms of\ncrysta
lline order composed of topologically stable spin states.\n
