DESCRIPTION:The Chinese legal system plays a crucial role in building Chin
a's\npolitical\, economic\, and social foundations. Despite its authoritar
ian\nnature\, the Chinese Party-state claims to envision rule-based\ngover
nance in China. But what is the relevance of Chinese law to the\ndiscourse
of the rule of law ideals in western countries? How can we\nassess the ef
fects of China’s legal change in the past century and\,\nabove all\, in
the past four decades? To what extent does China’s\nconstitutional arran
gement also fulfil the paragon of “separation of\npower” and “checks
and balances”? This talk will explore the concept\nof Chinese law in hi
storical context\, examine the basic structure of\nthe Party-state\, and p
rovide an overview of certain critical aspects\nof Chinese law that would
inform a general understanding of China's\nlegal system.\n\nRegister "here
