DESCRIPTION:The AdS/CFT correspondence has been one of the main engines dr
 iving progress in theoretical physics over the last two decades. I will be
 gin by discussing why it is important to arrive at a first principles unde
 rstanding of the underlying mechanism of this duality relating quantum fie
 ld theories and string theories (or other theories of gravity). I will the
 n proceed to discuss a very general approach which aims to relate large N 
 QFTs and string theories\, starting from free field theories. This corresp
 onds to a tensionless limit of the dual string theory on AdS spacetime. Fi
 nally\, I will discuss the specific case of an AdS_3/CFT_2 duality where o
 ne can carry this program through to fruition\, going from the string theo
 ry to the field theory and vice versa.
