DESCRIPTION:Optical interconnect for on-chip or board level signalling has
been discussed for many years as a potential path to overcoming the limit
ations of copper wires\, so far without any commercial success. However\,
the rapidly advancing field of silicon photonics may enable the fabricati
on of optical components at a similar cost to CMOS electronics. This talk
will provide a short tutorial on optical interconnect focussing on the po
tential advantages and how the new silicon based optical components could
be used. I will also discuss my initial research ideas. The purpose of t
he talk is to stimulate discussion and collaboration within the group.
