SUMMARY:The role of twist in shell structures - Barney Salsby\, Department
  of Engineering\, University of Cambridge
DTSTART:20201204T150000Z
DTEND:20201204T160000Z
UID:TALK153154@talks.cam.ac.uk
CONTACT:Dr Maria Marques de Carvalho
DESCRIPTION:\nFrom the wrinkling of skin on a forehead to the fractal patt
erns observed at the edge of a tear on a conventional bin bag\, structures
in nature all share an inherent ability to morph. Such shape-morphing str
uctures are at the core of future applications in aeronautics\, minimally
invasive surgery\, tissue engineering and smart materials. This talk will
explore the behaviour observed in the analytical study of a slender surfac
e with a twisted geometry coupled with differential stresses. It will also
seek to complement this by considering manufacturing techniques that can
be used for the realisation of these novel structures.\n
