STRACT*\n\nRus *_tol’ko_* and Chn *_zhiyou_* share an aggregate of prope
rties that set them apart from English *_only_*. The former two must be im
mediately adjacent to their focalized associate in contrast to English\, w
here focus association can be discontinuous. I aspire to show that this ad
jacency requirement is a consequence of syntactic focus movement\, trigger
ed by a strong [Foc] feature. The movement of this type results in right-a
djunction of an F-marked constituent to *_only_*\, yielding an appropriate
ly local feature-checking configuration. Rus/Chn *_only_* itself is limite
d to a handful of positions within the structure. Specifically\, it must m
eet two requirements in order to merge successfully. First\, *_only_* adjo
ins strictly to functional projections. Second\, these functional projecti
ons themselves must also be phases. Ultimately\, the goal is to demonstrat
e that *_only_* can adjoin to vP\, CP and FP: i.e. phasal functional proje
ctions in the verbal\, clausal and nominal domains. Theoretical implicatio
ns of this treatment are then discussed.
