SUMMARY:Eavesdropping at Scale: Shifting the Threat Model in Satellite Bro
adband - James Pavur\, University of Oxford

DESCRIPTION:This talk covers eavesdropping attacks targeting satellite bro
adband networks commonly used in maritime\, industrial\, and aviation cont
exts. We discuss a series of real-world experiments intercepting radio sig
nals from 18 satellites in geostationary orbit using inexpensive home-tele
vision hardware. The result of these experiments uncovered severe security
and privacy vulnerabilities impacting a variety of applications ranging f
rom superyachts to wind turbines. The talk also considers the underlying t
echnical and business drivers of these issues and promising approaches for
their remediation. While it touches on some technical aspects\, no backgr
ound in wireless communications\, cryptography\, or satellite networking i
s required to understand the presentation.\n\nRECORDING : Please note\, th
is event will be recorded and will be available after the event for an ind
eterminate period under a CC BY -NC-ND license. Audience members should be
ar this in mind before joining the webinar or asking questions.
