DESCRIPTION:The origin of massive black holes remains unknown and hotly de
 bated. This has significant consequences for our ability to accurately mod
 el black hole growth in galaxies given we do not have a solid foundation f
 rom which to start from. In this talk I will begin by outlining the curren
 t state-of-affairs in the field and then move onto discussing state-of-the
 -art numerical simulations which are beginning to shed some light onto thi
 s cosmic puzzle. I will also touch on how future Gravitational Wave measur
 ements from LISA will help in providing important clues to the origin of m
 assive black holes.
