DESCRIPTION:Human beings are much better in comparing two items than in qu
antifying them individually. So\, can\nwe arrange the items in the space a
ccording to their observed pairwise differences? And how many\ndimensions
do we need? Can we interpret the axes of the resulting coordinate system?\
nTo answer these questions\, we will first look at the underlying linear a
lgebra to derive Torgerson-\nscaling\, then we will discuss optimization m
ethods like (another) Kruskal’s algorithm for the cases\nwhen perfect ar
rangement is not possible. Finally\, we will see through some examples how
\nsociologists\, linguists\, mathematicians or even football coaches can u
 se MDS.
