DESCRIPTION:Offsite\nmanufacturing can be part of the solution to\nachieve
international sustainability goals and improve\nproductivity in the const
ruction industry However\, mass\nproduction can lead to a monotonous built
environment\nthat is alienating to people and therefore unsustainable\nPr
evious research has examined the required complexity\nof the built environ
ment through various experiments\, but\nin these\, respondents had to eval
uate conditions that did\nnot affect them personally As a result\, complex
attitudes\,\nlike nimbyism\, could have remained hidden\nTo\nfill this ga
p in research\, two online surveys were\nconducted\, with over 200 partici
pants\, focusing on the\nprejudices towards mass manufactured residential\
nbuildings and the criteria of the diversity of homes The\nfirst experimen
t examined how respondents would feel if\nthey had to see a similar home t
o theirs\, by varying\nvisiting frequency and similarity The second survey
\ninvestigated the real attitude of society towards these\nbuildings from
various angles with Likert Thurstone\nand semantic differential scales\nT\
ntests showed that the prejudices were positive in\ngeneral\, except conce
rning these buildings’ diversity\, and\nrespondents were negative only a
bout having to see\nregularly a similar dwelling to theirs These results h
ave\ndemonstrated that mass produced homes with custom\nfaçades can be so
 cially accepted\, so their production\ncould be sustainable\, and\, conseq
 uently\, useful in\novercoming housing crises
