DESCRIPTION:This talk examines practical methods for shared decision makin
g in human-robot teams\, highlighting recent work which applies methods fr
om artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive science. The notion of share
d decision making implies that the actors involved have a means to communi
cate their beliefs and can negotiate in case of conflict. A range of meth
ods are applicable for resolving conflict\, and the work discussed in this
talk highlights techniques that stem from the multi-agent systems (MAS) c
ommunity\, including voting\, market-based mechanisms and computational ar
gumentation. Emphasis is on practical methods that have been implemented a
nd tested on robots\, including those that have been evaluated with human
participants.\n\nBio: Prof Elizabeth Sklar is a Professor in Agri-Robotics
and Research Director in the Lincoln Institute for Agri-food Technology a
t the University of Lincoln. She is also a Visiting Professor of Robotics
in the Department of Engineering at King's College London. Previously\, sh
e has worked at MIT/Lincoln Lab\, Columbia University\, City University of
New York and University of Liverpool\, and was a US-UK Fulbright Scholar.
Her research investigates interaction in multi-robot and human-robot syst
ems\, and has been funded by the National Science Foundation (US)\, EPSRC\
, ESRC and BBSRC. She has published over 150 refereed papers\, and is form
er Trustee of the RoboCup Federation\, former IFAAMAS board member and cur
rent editorial board member for JAAMAS and Current Robotics Reports.
