DESCRIPTION:Intervertebral disc extrusion is one of the most common clinic
al diseases seen in small animal practice\, and leads to many canine death
s each year. Much of our understanding of this disease is still based on H
ansen’s original thesis from the 1950s\, and clinical approaches are dri
ven as much by fear of failure as a genuine evidence base for best practic
 e. Over the last 6 months we have begun to explore one of the more well-kn
own but less understood elements of the pathogenesis of this disease ie ho
w calcification of the disc may be involved in the disease process. At the
same time we are attempting to document the natural history of this disea
se in a way which has not been done before\, as well as creating better tr
 eatment guidelines.
