DESCRIPTION:The poor regenerative ability of the brain and spinal cord fol
 lowing injury or disease can lead to negative clinical outcomes\, with maj
 or consequences for patients and healthcare systems. Developing novel appr
 oaches to improve neural repair is therefore a key goal for regenerative m
 edicine. Neural tissue engineering is a relatively new field at the interf
 ace of neuroscience and engineering\, where approaches in neural cell biol
 ogy are combined with engineering principles to promote neurological repai
 r.\n\nThis talk will discuss the application of neural tissue engineering
 methods to develop:\n\n(i) improved stem/precursor cell transplantation th
 erapies (focusing on novel methods to genetically engineer and image trans
 plant populations\, and protect cells during transplantation procedures)\;
  and\n\n(ii) advanced ex vivo biological injury models including those usi
 ng human tissue for the early testing of regenerative materials/devices. T
 his is with the aim of reducing reliance on live animal neurological injur
 y models which are associated with a range of ethical\, logistical and cos
 t issues.
