DESCRIPTION:We introduce a new framework of scalings for the many flows as
ymptotic\nfor queueing systems. This asymptotic was first introduced by Al
an\nWeiss. This asymptotic is useful in estimating drop probabilities for\
nmodelling congestion control protocols as well as providing insight into\
nobserved phenomenon.\n\nTo introduce the framework we re-examine the prev
iously studied results\nand see how the scalings naturally generalise. Wit
hin the framework we\nconsider a simple Markovian example and followed by
the sample path\nlarge deviations for fractional Brownian motion. This all
ows us to\ndemonstrate the versatility and salient features of the framewo
rk.\n\nIn addition we briefly introduce results with in this framework fo
r\npoint processes which extend previous small buffer results. As well as\
npresenting some open problems thrown up by the new framework.\n
