DESCRIPTION:\nAs an artist\, designer and arts educator Susanna Edwards ha
s had a \nlong-standing interest in how technological advancements have af
fected \nthe way creative practitioners produce work. Through her artistic
\npractice and research\, Edwards explores the ways that shifts in \ntech
nology have affected art and design practice.\nSix years ago Edwards happe
ned upon a collection of 19th century \nbiological microscopic slides in a
charity shop. Intrigued by the \ncreativity and dexterity involved in mak
ing these delicate objects\, she \nbegan to research the history of micros
copy\, in particular its \ndevelopment from craft to digital. Her investig
ations revealed the \nchanging techniques for creating\, viewing and docum
enting microscopic \nslides\, and the impact of the technological and digi
tal revolution on \nthe practice of microscopy.\nOut of these investigatio
ns came the idea for the project Curious: \nFocusing on microscopy as a pa
radigm to examine technological (and thus \nvisual) developments\, the pro
ject documents the found microscopic slides \nphotographically using micro
scopes from 1750 to now\, loaned by the \nScience Museum\, London. The pro
 ject demonstrates\, through a series of \nphotographic based art works\, t
he way developments in technology have \naugmented shifts in the visual wo
rld. It examines the advantages of \nthese shifts to science\, and convers
ely the problems encountered by art \nand design of technology purging cra
ft based practices.\nCurious involved a residency working with the Science
Museum’s \nmicroscope collection. It has been sponsored by the Arts Cou
ncil London\, \nThe Gulbenkian Foundation\, UCCA Farnham and London Metrop
olitan \nUniversity. This is a work in progress and will be exhibited in f
 ull\, \nearly 2010 at the Huntarian Museum London.\nFor more information a
bout the work please contact Susanna Edwards\nwww.susannaedwards.com\n
