t*\n\n\n*Join this Bennett Institute event to hear leading experts from ac
ademia\, government and the voluntary sector discuss the value of social i
nfrastructure in building socially cohesive and economically vibrant commu
nities.* \n\nThe Covid-19 pandemic has placed huge strain on local communi
ties. Hospitals have come close to being overwhelmed\; vulnerable and elde
rly citizens have become isolated\; mental-ill health has soared\; familie
s have been separated and jobs have been lost. Many of these pressures hav
e been felt most acutely by those communities which were already strugglin
g.\n\nThroughout the pandemic\, however\, we have witnessed the strength a
nd resilience of many of our communities. Across the UK\, mutual aid group
s have proliferated\, armies of volunteers have emerged and acts of neighb
ourly generosity have become commonplace. But some places have found it ea
sier than others to build strong local networks of support.\n\nTo what ext
ent does the mobilisation of local people in response to moments of crisis
hinge on the local conditions of the place they live? Much is understood
about the importance of physical infrastructure – roads\, railways\, bri
dges and airports. But what about a place’s social infrastructure? Do co
mmunities which boast well-funded libraries\, properly maintained parks\,
a smattering of bustling pubs and a thriving community hall find it easier
to come together and support one another when things are tough? And what
role will this social infrastructure play in levelling up our communities
as we eventually turn our attention away from the immediate health and eco
nomic shocks of the pandemic towards the post-Covid recovery?\n\n\n*Chair*
