DESCRIPTION:Theme: *Brains & Machines*\n\nOne of the most important scient
ific and technological frontiers of our time is the interfacing of electro
nics with the human brain. This endeavour promises to help understand how
the brain works and deliver new tools for diagnosis and treatment of patho
logies including epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. Current solutions\, h
owever\, are limited by the materials that are brought in contact with the
tissue and transduce signals across the biotic/abiotic interface. Recent
advances in electronics have made available materials with a unique combin
ation of attractive properties\, including mechanical flexibility\, mixed
 ionic/electronic conduction\, enhanced biocompatibility\, and capability f
or drug delivery. Professor Malliaras will present examples of novel devic
es for recording and stimulation of neurons and show that organic electron
ic materials offer tremendous opportunities to study the brain and treat i
ts pathologies.\n\n\nGeorge Malliaras received a PhD from the University o
f Groningen (Netherlands) and taught at Cornell (NY\, USA) and School of M
ines (France) before joining Cambridge. His research on electronics and bi
oelectronics has been recognised with awards from the NY Academy of Scienc
es\, the US National Science Foundation\, and DuPont\, and a Honorary Doct
orate from the University of Linköping (Sweden). He is a Fellow of the Ma
terials Research Society and of the Royal Society of Chemistry and serves
as Deputy Editor of Science Advances.\n\nRegister in advance for this meet
