DESCRIPTION:In general\, the historiography of slavery renders the enslave
d as passive victims without voice. This presentation offers a new avenue
to reactive voices of Black subjects under French colonial rule in the Car
ibbean. Using historical archaeology through a Black feminist lens to addr
ess and confront certain historiography-based assumptions about enslaved p
opulations\, I explore slave foodways to suggest these daily subsistence p
ractices\, many of which were performed by Black women\, were a form of tr
ansformative Black resistance for identity formation and societal change.\
