DESCRIPTION:Robert Hartley is a partner and solicitor-advocate in the tax 
 disputes team at Mishcon de Reya. Having been both an undergraduate and a 
 postgraduate at the University of Cambridge\, Robert worked for a time as 
 a junior barrister before beginning a tax career. Alongside his commercial
  work\, Robert has been a visiting lecturer at King's College London. \nDr
 awing on his experience in direct taxes and indirect taxes\, Robert will t
 ake a practical look at tax disputes in the UK over the last twenty years 
 and how they progress from initial enquiries to resolution. The talk will 
 touch on matters such as: developments in the way HM Revenue & Customs app
 roach tax avoidance\, evidential issues such as privilege\, and the human 
 cost of unresolved tax disputes. As well as its academic and technical val
 ue\, this talk will also be helpful for anyone considering a legal career 
 in tax specifically or in contentious matters more generally.
