DESCRIPTION:People with autism are often perceived to have atypical prosod
 y. This\, coupled with the language impairment that is a diagnostic featur
e of autism\, raises questions about the relationship between prosody and
language in language acquisition. Recent projects have investigated recept
ive and expressive prosody skills in school-age children with high-functio
ning autism spectrum conditions and compared them with those of \nage-matc
hed and language-matched typically-developing children. Results suggest th
at while some prosodic skills are preserved in autism\, others are impaire
d\; and that although there are strong correlations between prosody and la
nguage skills the relationship between the two is complex and requires fur
 ther research.
