DESCRIPTION:This talk will shed light on the process of adopting progressi
ve pedagogies\, mainly from Freire’s work\, in the Palestinian school cu
lture. Rabab’s main argument is that the process is challenging especial
ly when it is conducted in a context that has witnessed seven decades of p
olitical and social oppression. As a result\, the dialectic relationship b
etween theory and practice plays a major role in shaping the type of educa
tional leadership that the field calls for. Rabab’s presentation will\,
thus\, be divided into two parts. In part one\, she will share her own int
erpretation of emancipatory pedagogies and describe the challenges that th
ey\, as Palestinian educators have faced when implementing them in practic
 e. In Part II\, Rabab will describe the particular context of Palestinian
education and discuss how social\, political and historical factors have i
nfluenced both the culture of schools culture and educators' activism. Rab
ab will support her argument with two case studies of what she perceives t
o have been successful initiatives that show some indicators of progressiv
e change: one in the Palestinian Authority in the occupied West Bank and t
he other in an Arab school in the city of Haifa. Finally\, Rabab will outl
ine some issues she believes both academics and educators anywhere should
consider as they integrate critical pedagogies within their respective set
tings.\n\nRabab Tamish is an assistant professor at Faculty of Education-

ultant in training programs for professional educators in the field of com

. She is the first director and founder of the Center for Excellence in Te
aching and Learning at Bethlehem University\, which aimed to provide oppor
tunities for faculty members to enrich their pedagogical and action resear
ch practices. Rabab has been engaged in several school research projects t
hat aim to enhance the quality of education in Palestinian schools by payi
ng attention on the school as a development unit where parents\, teachers\
, headteachers and pupils work together to improve the quality of the lear
ning culture within their respective contexts.\n\nWednesday 10th February
