DESCRIPTION:Biology has a long tradition of developing concepts and models
from data and the current explosion of biological data has attracted math
ematical and computational scientists to the challenge. In this talk\, I w
ill suggest that there may also be another role for mathematical theory\,
in formulating an integrated conceptual understanding that is independent
of particular experimental methods and data. I will discuss some of the th
eoretical challenges that arise in trying to get behind the data\, illustr
ating this with work from our lab on eukaryotic gene regulation.
