DESCRIPTION:The B.1.1.7 lineage of SARS-CoV-2 was first identified in the
South East of England during the Autumn of 2020. It is more transmissible
than previously circulating variants and spread rapidly despite the second
national lockdown in November. Over the same period hospital services wer
e under immense pressure and the NHS was at risk of being over-whelmed. pa
rticularly in intensive care. Issues with hospital capacity are known to i
ncrease mortality. We conducted a matched cohort study to examine the inde
pendent effect of B.1.1.7 infection on mortality against this complex and
shifting background of risks and biases.
