DESCRIPTION:The first row transition metals like iron\, copper and mangane
se are nutritionally essential because they are used in bioenergetic syste
ms to catalyze redox reactions\, which are the basis for life. The bioavai
lability of these elements has changed over the few billion years since th
e origin of life so that the growth potential of many organisms can be lim
ited by mineral nutrition. Accordingly\, organisms have devised mechanisms
to survive transient and even sustained deficiency. The mechanisms involv
ed in maintaining copper and iron homeostasis in Chlamydomonas will be pre
sented. Use of state of the art RNA-Seq methodology to characterize the Ch
lamydomonas transcriptome will also be presented. The analyses indicate pr
eviously unknown modifications of the photosynthetic apparatus and the pot
ential for modification of bioenergetic pathways.\n\nhttp://www.chem.ucla.
