SUMMARY:Structural loads from high explosive blast: what we know and what
we don't know. - Andy Tyas\, University of Sheffield

DESCRIPTION:Design of efficient and effective protection against blast loa
ding from the detonation of high explosive blast requires a firm understan
ding of the loads that structural systems may be expected to withstand. Bu
t this sets great challenges for experimental researchers\, as the peak ma
gnitude of the loading may be >1GPa and the durations are measured in micr
o- or milliseconds. This seminar will discuss some of the fundamentals of
blast loading\, identifying where we have sound understanding of both the
mechanisms and magnitudes of loading and where our knowledge is less certa
in\, setting out the challenges for researchers into blast resistant struc
 tures and materials.\n
