SUMMARY:Volcanic crystals as archives of pre-eruptive processes - Dr Teres
a Ubide - University of Queensland

DESCRIPTION:Volcanic crystals provide detailed records of the inner workin
gs of volcanoes and improve our understanding of the depths\, processes an
d timescales of magma transport\, storage and eruption. The growth stratig
raphy of minerals sampled by erupted magmas provides a unique archive of p
rocesses leading to eruption\, including mixing\, replenishment\, differen
tiation and mobilisation of mantle-to-crustal reservoirs. The identificati
on of eruption triggers from the mineral record has implications for the u
nderstanding of trans-crustal magma feeder systems\, the monitoring of act
ive volcanoes and their associated hazards. This talk will interrogate mag
matic systems from a crystal perspective\, highlighting recent technical a
 dvances and future directions. \n
LOCATION:The talk will be held on Gathertown as part of the Sedgwick Club'
s annual conference. Please contact jac293@cam.ac.uk for details
