DESCRIPTION:Since being pioneered by Efron (1979) and introduced to phylog
enetics by Felsenstein (1985)\, non-parametric bootstrapping has been wide
ly used in statistics and statistical phylogenetics to generate measures o
f statistical uncertainty. Less widely adopted is Felsenstein's (1988) sug
gestion to use parametric bootstrapping (or more generally\, simulation) t
o assess variability in estimates. Here I give a brief description of boot
strapping in phylogenetics\, including some associated controversies\, des
cribe the general framework of parametric bootstrapping and provide some e
xamples from tree inference and ancestral sequence reconstruction to demon
 strate its flexibility and power.
