DESCRIPTION:I will present _ab initio_ determinations of diffusion coeffic
ients for native defects in alumina (Al2O3)\, which provide resolution to
long-standing questions about the nature of transport in corundum-structur
e materials. I will demonstrate the important role played by aliovalent im
purity dopants\, which act to "buffer" concentrations of native defects th
rough the formation of clusters of native defects and substitutional impur
ities\, explaining the remarkably small changes in bulk diffusion constant
 s upon aliovalent doping.\n\n"Download slides":http://www.tcm.phy.cam.ac.u
