DESCRIPTION:The formation of the blastocyst during preimplantation develop
ment constitutes a unique opportunity to study living mammalian embryos. T
he blastocyst consists of a surface epithelium enveloping a fluid-filled l
umen and a cluster of pluripotent stem cells. This specific architecture i
s key for the implantation and further the development of the mammalian em
bryo. Using biophysical measurements and modelling\, we have uncovered ove
r the past years some of the mechanisms shaping the blastocyst. We will di
scuss how changes in mechanical properties of cells drive the compaction o
f the embryo\, differential positioning of cells within the embryo and the
formation of the first mammalian lumen.
